Produced at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Machinal opened the 2012-2013 season dedicated to women playwrights. The performance took place in the department’s black box theater. The show itself deals with the struggles of a young woman who is trying to find herself among the pressures of 1920s social and biological constructs; the machine of everyday life.
The pressure of social normativity, and the idea that the society of the 1920s as a machine is what drove the inspiration for the set. Some inspiration was also taken from the Art Deco style of the 1920s and the decision to keep the set black and white (as well as most of the costumes) was to distinguish those moments of color, of individuality that drives the main character.
